Unique rotations

Ventilator management, POCUS, addiction medicine, social medicine, junior hospitalist, and junior attending rotations.

We are an acute care hospital in the South Bronx, minutes from Manhattan, with 362 inpatient beds — about 120 of them allocated to Internal Medicine — and roughly 12,000 medicine discharges a year. Our Emergency Department’s Level 1 trauma center is one of the busiest in the United States, and we are a designated stroke center. Our residents are exposed to a vast range of pathology that prepares them for whatever path they choose.

The residency is the largest program in the hospital, with about 125 residents, 100 of them categorical. Floor teams are led by an attending with one PGY-2 and three PGY-1s, supported by medical students from St. George’s University. Nights are two-week rotations covering the floors or the ICU. Our 40-bed telemetry unit acts as an ICU step-down and, unusually, cares for ventilated patients outside the ICU; our medical ICU has been recognized for acute stroke management.

Beyond the core rotations in cardiology, critical care, nephrology, endocrinology, geriatrics, gastroenterology, infectious disease, pulmonary medicine, palliative care, rheumatology, and neurology — led by attendings from all over the world — we offer a ventilator rotation covering non-invasive and invasive mechanical ventilation and extubations on the telemetry unit; dedicated research and peer-based learning rotations; a practice-based learning rotation that develops residents as teachers; and a clinic rotation through non-medical specialties such as orthopedics and gynecology, plus dermatology and anesthesia electives.

Our graduates have recently matched into fellowships in cardiology, endocrinology, geriatrics, hepatology, infectious disease, rheumatology, pulmonary/critical care, nephrology, and palliative care, and many go on to become hospitalists and primary care physicians.
