How to Apply

Applications are accepted only through ERAS, and all positions are filled through the NRMP Match.

Eligibility

The application criteria are set by the resident selection committee. Suggested criteria include, but are not limited to:

  1. Graduation from a U.S. or Canadian medical school, or a valid ECFMG certificate by the NRMP match date.
  2. Passing USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK on the first attempt.

Applicants are screened on USMLE scores, letters of recommendation, and the personal statement. Prior experience in the United States is not required.

The interview

Selected applicants are invited to interview, either virtually or in person (in-person slots are limited). Interviews generally run from November through December. Every applicant meets two members of the resident selection committee. During virtual interviews, applicants meet the chief residents and other residents and are then interviewed online by faculty. Choosing a virtual or in-person interview does not affect your application in any way. A virtual tour is provided online.

Once interviews are complete, the department prepares a rank order list and submits it to the NRMP. All available positions are filled through the NRMP.

Visas

For matched candidates who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents, the hospital accepts only J-1 visas, sponsored through ECFMG. See the ECFMG checklists for details.

After the Match

All matched residents receive a contract letter, a copy of which is returned to the department. Incoming house staff attend a mandatory orientation organized by Graduate Medical Education 10–14 days before training officially begins. The employment contract follows the agreement between the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) and NYC Health + Hospitals.
