Department of Medicine

The largest department at Lincoln Hospital: every subspecialty represented, every attending board certified, and the main training site for the Internal Medicine residency.

Department of Medicine

The Department of Medicine is the largest department at Lincoln Hospital. All subspecialties are represented and all attending physicians are board certified. The department is responsible for more than 12,000 discharges a year, and its clinics provide expert care to more than 50,000 patients annually.

The hospital and the department have been recognized by U.S. News & World Report for excellent care of patients with COPD and heart failure. The Division of Palliative Care and Pain Management is one of the few in the country certified by The Joint Commission, and the hospital has received the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines recognition for stroke care for many years running.

The department is the main training site for the Internal Medicine Residency Program and hosts the core medicine rotation for students from St. George’s School of Medicine and New York Medical College, many of whom also choose electives in the department and its divisions. Residents from other Lincoln programs — Emergency Medicine and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery — complete their required medicine rotations here as well.

The Department of Medicine works in close collaboration with every other department to support the comprehensive management of their patients. Patient safety and quality improvement are the backbone of the department, carried out with the active involvement of all residents. Research is strongly encouraged: residents present at the hospital’s annual research competition, and many residents and faculty present at regional and national meetings.
