Point-of-Care Ultrasound

One of the first programs to build point-of-care ultrasound into the residency curriculum.

Point-of-Care Ultrasound

The program is one of the few — if not the first — to incorporate point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) into the residency curriculum. The goal is to build residents’ knowledge and skills in the basics of ultrasound, bedside scanning, and applying what they see to diagnosis and treatment under attending supervision. Ultrasound has become a vital part of bedside procedures.

The dedicated two-week POCUS rotation, begun in July 2019, is supervised by faculty trained in hospitalist POCUS. The department has four ultrasound machines and three handheld devices, and residents scan the lungs, heart, IVC, aorta, gallbladder, kidneys, and bladder among other organs. Residents who pass the rotation and maintain their skills throughout residency are certified in POCUS by the program at graduation.
