Welcome to our new Pulmonary and Critical Care medicine fellowship program accredited by the ACGME in April 2021. Even though we may be designated as new, however will have been dedicated to Pulmonary and critical care training of fellows
with Westchester Medical program in Valhalla, NY since July 2012.
Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center is a 362 bed hospital located in South Bronx and part of the NYC Health& Hospitals corporation system. Our hospital is a busy inner-city public facility well known for its diverse patient population and very busy pulmonary and medical intensive care services.
Mission Statement
Our program is to educate and effectively train fellows to be excellent physicians in the field of pulmonary and critical care medicine with emphasis on academic medicine as well as medical research. Our program will also foster a community-based experience and learning in pulmonary/critical care medicine that will better prepare our physicians who choose to pursue a career in community practice.
Program Goals and Objectives
The goals and objectives of our program are designed and aligned with the ACGME core competencies. The fellows will be trained:
1. To demonstrate adequate knowledge in the diagnosis and management of disorders relating to pulmonary and critical
care medicine.
2. To demonstrate practice and technical skills including advanced procedural skills necessary for evaluation and management of pulmonary disease and critically ill patients in the settings of academic and community practices.
3. To apply best clinical practices to improve health outcomes and patient safety as a dedicated specialist in pulmonary and critical care medicine.
Recruitment
Applicants must have completed an ACGME accredited program in Internal Medicine. Starting in summer 2021 we will use the Electronic Residency Application service (ERAS) and the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). The program will accept two (2) fellows each year to make a total of six (6). Two fellows have started in July 2021.

Curriculum
The program curriculum is designed to ensure that each fellow is provided with broad and comprehensive clinical training including research to create strong and well-rounded physicians for an exciting career in Pulmonary Critical Care and lifelong learning.
Lincoln Medical Center is the primary training site for the Pulmonary and Critical Care medicine program. The Program is 36 months (3 years) of combined pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine training. It consists of at least 18 months of clinical rotations that will include core rotations in medical ICU, pulmonary consultations and electives in the non-medical ICUs and pulmonary subspecialties. Ambulatory Pulmonary clinic experience occurs throughout the 36 months of fellowship. Research is an integral part of the fellowship training.
The training experience will consist of the following rotations with approximate durations as follows:
A: Core Rotations
· Medical ICU/CCU (11 months)
· Pulmonary Inpatient/Consultative service (9 months)
B: Non-Core Rotations
· Non-medical ICUs (4 months)
· Interventional Pulmonology (3 months)
· Sleep Medicine (1month)
· Pulmonary Subspecialty rotations (1.5 months)
· Anesthesia/Chest Radiology (1 month)
· Research (4 months)
Didactic & Scholarly Activities
Fellows will be required for their fellowship educational experience to routinely participate in the following division conferences:
· Introductory Core Curriculum Workshop and Lectures from July – September that will include workshops on simulations like airway management, bronchoscopy/EBUS, thoracentesis/thoracostomy, tracheostomy care, ultrasound including POCUS.
· Core Curriculum Conference series, Clinical Case conferences
· Journal club, Grand Rounds, Tumor board interdisciplinary meetings
· Morbidity and Mortality conferences, Quality Improvement conferences
· Radiology and Pathology conferences
· Research conferences including attendance of national clinical/translational research meetings like American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), American Thoracic Society (ATS).
Resources
Our program is covered by six core faculty members who provide comprehensive medical ICU (MICU) service and pulmonary outpatient and inpatient/consultative service that provide the fellows with the opportunity to have vast knowledge and skills in managing pulmonary/critical care patients. The MICU has dedicated and knowledgeable critical care nurses and 24-hour a day respiratory therapists that provide effective patient care and necessary support to our training fellows. Our facility also has a pulmonary function lab and state of the art bronchoscopy and EBUS from which our fellows have abundant opportunities to learn from. In addition, we have simulation laboratory available to argument the fellow’s education.
