The Department of Medicine is the largest Department at Lincoln Hospital. All subspecialties are represented and all attending physicians are Board Certified. The department is responsible for more than 12,000 discharges and its clinics provide expert care to more than 50,000 patients per year.
The hospital and the department have been recognized for providing excellent care for patients with COPD and Heart Failure by the latest U.S. News and World Report.
The Division of Palliative care and pain management is one of the few in the country certified by the Joint Commission. We have received several years in a row recognition for Get With the Guidelines for Stroke by the American Heart Association.
The department of Medicine is the main training site for the Residency Program in Internal Medicine. It is also a site for the core rotation in Medicine for Students from St. Georges School of Medicine, who also choose to have many of their electives at the department and its divisions. In addition, residents from other residency programs based at Lincoln Hospital (Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medicine) have their required rotations at the Department.
The Department of Medicine works in close collaboration with all other departments to provide assistance in the comprehensive management of their patients.
Patient Safety and Quality Improvement are the backbones of the Department. These activities are carried with the active involvement of all residents.
Research is strongly encouraged and residents’ results are presented at the annual research competition sponsored by the Hospital. Many residents and faculty present their work at regional and national scientific meetings and conferences.
