
INTRODUCTION
Welcome to our new Critical Care Medicine fellowship program track starting in July 2026. This program is accredited by the ACGME and is two years of clinical training for subspecialty certification in Critical Care Medicine. There is also one year of Critical Care medicine training open to our Infectious Disease (ID)/Critical care medicine fellows after the completion of their 2 years of training in Infectious Disease fellowship at Lincoln medical center.
Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center is a 362-bed hospital located in South Bronx and part of the NYC Health& Hospitals corporation system. Our hospital is a busy inner-city public facility well known for its diverse patient population and wide variety of pathology, making for very busy medical intensive care services.
MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission for the Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at Lincoln Medical Center program is to provide superior clinical and academic training of the next generation of intensivists. Our program will also foster a community-based experience and learning in Critical care medicine and great exposure to both a busy medical ICU as well as to the various non-medical ICUs that will better prepare them for an exciting career in Critical care medicine.

PROGRAM GOALS AND OBJECTIVES The goals and objectives of the Critical Care Medicine Program are:
1. To provide comprehensive clinical training in the care of critically ill patients
2. To develop critical thinking skills applicable to any patient with single or multisystem organ failure
3. To demonstrate adequate knowledge in the diagnosis and management of disorders relating to both medical and non-medical critical ill patients.
4. To provide proficiency in critical care procedural skills necessary for evaluation and management of critically ill patients in the settings of academic and community practices.
5. To apply best clinical practices to improve health outcomes and patient safety as a dedicated intensivist.
6. To train the next generation of academic leaders.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS There are two categories of Applicants to our Critical care medicine (CCM) fellowship track:
1. Applicants for the 2 -year CCM fellowship training track must have completed an ACGME accredited program in Internal Medicine or Emergency Medicine.
2. The 1-year CCM fellowship training track is open to our Infectious Disease (ID)/Critical care medicine fellows after the completion of their 2 years of training in Infectious Disease fellowship at Lincoln medical center.
The Critical Care medicine fellowship track uses the Electronic Residency Application service (ERAS) and the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
The program will accept one (1) fellow each year for the 2-year CCM fellowship track.
The 1-year CCM fellowship track accepts one (1) ID/Critical Care fellow every year after their 2 years of training in ID fellowship at Lincoln Medical Center.
CURRICULUM
Lincoln Medical Center is the primary training site for the Critical Care medicine Fellowship program with outside rotations at Montefiore Medical Center NY and NYCHH/Bellevue Hospital, NY.
A: The Two-year Critical Care Medicine fellowship track training experience will consist of the following rotations with approximate durations as follows:
Year 1
· Medical ICU (4months)
· Cardiac Care Unit [CCU] (1month)
· Surgical ICU/Trauma (2months)
· Neuro-ICU (1month)
· Cardiothoracic-ICU (1month)
· Electives (2months)
· Research (1month)
Year 2
· Medical ICU (4months)
· Surgical ICU/Trauma (2months)
· Neuro-ICU (1month)
· Cardiothoracic-ICU (1month)
· Elective (2months)
· Research (2months)
B: The One-year Critical Care Medicine fellowship track training experience will consist of the following rotations with approximate durations as follows:
· Medical ICU (6months)
· Cardiac Care Unit [CCU] (1month)
· Surgical ICU/Trauma (1month)
· Neuro-ICU (1month)
· Cardiothoracic-ICU (1month)
· Elective (1month)
· Research (1month)
ELECTIVE ROTATIONS to choose from include but not limited to the following: Airway management/Anesthesia, Bronchoscopy, Advanced Point of care ultrasound (POCUS), Palliative Care, other medicine subspecialty exposures like pulmonary/Renal/ID etc.
OUTSIDE ROTATIONS
· Cardiac Care Unit (CCU), Cardiothoracic-ICU (CT-ICU) at Montefiore Medical Center, NY
· Neuro-ICU at NYCHH/Bellevue Hospital, NY
DIDACTIC & SCHOLARLY ACTIVITIES Fellows will be required for their fellowship educational experience to routinely participate in the following division conferences:
· Introductory Summer Didactic and Simulation training conferences (BOOT CAMP) annually from July – September that will include workshops on simulations like airway management, bronchoscopy/EBUS, thoracentesis/thoracostomy, tracheostomy care, ultrasound including POCUS
· Daily Medical ICU morning report with fellows and faculty
· Core Curriculum Lecture series
· Clinical Case conferences
· Grand Rounds
· Journal club
· Morbidity and Mortality conferences,
· Patient Safety and Quality Improvement conferences
· Radiology and Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) conferences
· Research conferences including attendance at Society of Critical Care medicine conferences
· Critical Care medicine board review series
RESOURCES
Our program has a total of 10 board certified Critical care attendings, 2 of whom are Emergency Medicine/Critical care and 8 are Pulmonary medicine/Critical Care. The faculty provide comprehensive medical ICU (MICU) service and are actively involved in the teaching of the fellows. The MICU has dedicated and knowledgeable critical care nurses and 24-hour a day respiratory therapists that provide effective patient care and necessary support to our training fellows. Our facility also has a simulation laboratory available to augment the fellow’s education.
