Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology

Administration:
The division is part of an active department of medicine and is staffed by two multi- board certified attendings, one of the attendings also completed liver transplant fellowship. Physician assistants supplement the attending staff in providing state of the art therapy to patients.

The division as won many awards at both local and national levels.

Clinical activity:
The division manages a wide range GI and herpetology pathologies including but not limited to inflammatory bowel disease, colon cancer, peptic ulcer dx, biliopancreatic disorders, hepatoma and chronic hepatitis.

Endoscopic procedures performed include diagnostic and therapeutic ERCP, diagnostic and therapeutic EGD, diagnostic upper and lower GI tract EUS, diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy.

Therapeutic measures such as stent placement and argon plasma coagulation are also done. Liver biopsies are a joint GI and Interventional radiology venture. The division is part of a multidisciplinary team providing evidenced based care to patients

Quality Indicators:
  • An average of 3395 endoscopic procedures are done annually
  • The incidence of endoscopic complications are well below the national average
  • The GI outpatient visits annual average is 2434, the annual Hepatitis outpatient visits 1156 and an average of 1000 patients     are seen on inpatient consultation

  • Research:
    Research on colon cancer have been published in national journals, and there is ongoing research on hepatitis C and colon caner/polyp with participation by residents.
